Notes on Rome Art Week 2021

Now in its sixth edition (25-30 October 2021), RAW, Rome Art Week, promoted by the KOU Association, is a manifestation dedicated to contemporary arts aimed at establishing a sophisticated network of people and structures dedicated to the contemporary to foster a current vision of art at a local and international level. Although emerging, RAW has managed to catalyze the interest of artists, curators, critics and public, private institutions and museums, integrating itself into the cultural and social fabric of the city for the purpose of enhancing the contemporary.

With over 500 participations, including galleries and institutions, artists and curators, in addition to various international institutional projects, with artists coming from over 22 countries, RAW has proposed 376 events including exhibitions, meetings and open studios scattered in all 35 districts of Rome. Among other shows, events talks and virtual events, the Gallery Night event on Friday 29 October well gives a sense of the vibrant and vitalist atmosphere of RAW. Among the artistic and cultural offerings that can still be visited, we point out: the photographic exhibition Souvenirs of Time by CY Twombly at the Gagosian gallery where the artist presents a series of photographs of ateliers, private spaces and classical sculptures, shot in a period of about sixty years between the United States and in Italy. At Maja Arte Contemporanea, the exhibition Who is Afraid of Pink?, by the artist Ria Lussi presents seventeen ironic self-portraits in acrylic to suggest a reflection on feminism today. AlbumArte presents SUBVERSIONS by artist Estibaliz Sádaba Murguía, where she investigates the role of the woman today between the domestic and the public spheres, a project which was entailment of the Program for the Internationalization of Spanish Culture 2021.

The exhibition proposal was accompanied by guided visits to the studios of artists residing in the suggestive neighborhoods of Trastevere, Testaccio, Pigneto and Campo de ‘Fiori. In addition to this is the consolidated collaboration between Rome Art Week and the Miami New Media Festival, now at its 16th edition, through the virtual presentation of a series of video and multimedia works in response to the call “New Media Art and the pandemic”.

How the artistic direction suggests, this edition of RAW this edition wanted to enhance the role of curators as key figures of contemporary art. This can be evinced by the curatorial projects conceived for this edition and by the section “Punti di Vista” which gathers together contribution from notable critical and curators such as Alberto Dambruoso, Alessandra Caponi, Claudio Strinati, Claudio Zambianchi, Giovanni Albanese, Greta Alberta Tirloni, Massimiliano Reggiani Massimo Scaringella, Raffaele Quattrone, invited to judge the work of the artists on exhibit and to highligh the excellence of this event.

But, the relational strength of RAW does not limit itself to this week in Rome. It rather aims to foster and consolidate partnerships and relationships throughout all the year at the platform: www.romeartweek.com with the aim of promoting, disseminating, and exploit all the different forms and expressions of contemporary arts.
