Opening on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, the exhibition titled “Fragments of Infinity” featuring artists Fabio Ingrosso and Sofia Schartner, curated by Greta Zuccali.
An evocative title that refers both to the traces that humans leave on the world and to the fragments of memory and experience that emerge from the artworks. Both Ingrosso and Schartner present works that suggest how our experience of the world is fragmentary, composed of fleeting moments, memories, and sensations. Both artists are engaged in a search for the absolute, a deeper meaning of existence, and an understanding of the universe, focusing on certain aspects of human life, revealing the beauty of uniqueness and impermanence.
Fabio Ingrosso’s work immerses us in a profound reflection on the transience of existence and the nature of man in relation to the universe. His roots in Arte Povera and Conceptual Art are manifested in a material and procedural choice that refers to the earth, the sea, and time. In the installation titled “Beyond the Sky,” the artist imagines a multisensory exploration of the relationship between man and the cosmos, dividing it into three conceptual moments. The wonder represented by a silent and hypnotic black and white video installation projects us into an abstract universe, where images of the moon and stars unleash a primordial emotion: wonder. Discovery: a series of material sculptures, made of iron and marble dust, invite us to touch the immensity of the cosmos. The geometric shapes, which recall lunar and rocky landscapes, testify to man’s attempt to measure and understand the immeasurable through science and art. Finally, nothingness: an ephemeral and intense experience, where a boundary of dust and earth dissolves under our feet, accompanied by a rarefied sound. A work that reminds us of our finiteness in the face of infinity, the fragility of our existence, and the awareness that all knowledge, all experience, is destined to fade away over time.
Sofia Schartner’s artistic research is characterized by the practice of accumulation and archiving, which are for her like a secret garden. In this space, free from the impositions of synthesis, the artist cultivates a narrative made up of fragments, repetitions, and visual rhythms. It is in the process of collecting and organizing that chaos turns into order, and complexity reveals itself in its beauty. Each element, even the most insignificant, finds its place in an ever-evolving mosaic. By narrowing our gaze, we open the doors to a world of unexpected meanings, where diversity is celebrated and repetition becomes a mantra. Starting from this approach, the work “Anonymous Portraits” was born, an archive of crystallized memories. One hundred blood samples, sealed in resin, become as many snapshots of suspended lives. Each sample is a biological fingerprint, a fragment of existence made anonymous and eternal. An installation that invites reflection on the nature of memory, the fragility of the individual, and the universality of the human experience. Emphasis on the creative process and the interaction of materials is given instead in the work “A Dilemma”. Wood and magnet, such different materials, dialogue in an installation that explores the concepts of constraint and yielding, control and abandonment. Visible forces, such as the wooden structure, and invisible ones, such as the magnetic field, intertwine in a play of attraction and repulsion, reflecting the dynamics that govern our lives.
The artists
Fabio Ingrosso
Artist and musician, he also works under the pseudonym _doo_t. (Death of the Olive Trees). After training at the Academy of Fine Arts SantaGiulia in Brescia and working with Stefano Bombardieri, he has developed a research that explores disintegration, destruction, and the end in many of its forms. His influences, rooted in Arte Povera and Conceptual Art, are reflected in the use of techniques such as cyanotype, iron and wood sculpture, and lead casting. On Instagram, his profile is: _doo_t
Sofia Schartner
Born in England, with Italian and Swiss-French roots, she lives in Milan. Her complex identity, the result of a cultural mix, is not foreign to her artistic practice. In her works, she explores the notion of belonging and the dynamics that exist between the individual and the social context. This multidisciplinary approach leads her to experiment with different techniques and to investigate heterogeneous themes. On Instagram, her profile is: sofia_schartner
