Lorem Ipsum. Vertices beyond the liminal at Spazio In Situ

It is in crossing the ultimate limit that a new identity perspective is defined, free from the weight of one’s self-determination. The hour of the passage allows you to flow in unexpected ways and the secrets of the unknown unfold revealing the richness of the potential of infinity. The Roman artist-run space Spazio In Situ, which, following the bequest of the direction of Christophe Constantin to Andrea Frosolini, has renewed its promise to artistic research, has opened the autumn season with the exhibition Lorem Ipsum. A collective exhibition without a theme curated by Irene Sofia Comi, a call to which the entire team of artists from In Situ responds. What stands out, already in the terms of the title, as the first element of discontinuity in the orientation of the curatorial programming is the choice of depriving it of a specific central theme, to which the reflective attention of the artists can converge and from which the exhibition could start.

At this juncture, the conception of the group show already departs from the classical curatorial methodology, denying the rigidity and predictability of a path now canonized at an institutional level and claiming the genuineness of free expression urged by experimentation. The first effort on the road to overcoming the limit is therefore represented by the need to break the link between the creative design of the exhibition and the theming focus from which it is structured. By canceling the co-dependence of these two spheres, Lorem Ipsum opens the lock of Pandora’s box, freeing the spirit of In Situ, intent on living a new experiential dimension of fluidity. The the narrative text Franco’s story (Lorem Ipsum) at the opening of the exhibition is a direct reflection of the condition of constraint in which the sacred white cube, which is then Spazio In Situ, revolves. The tenderness of the outburst, in an intimate and touching narration with which the space confides to its readers the abuses of which it has felt victimized over the years, becomes a key to interpreting a path of rebirth and spatial and ideological requalification, which finally focuses on desires deprived of the space itself, which cannot exempt itself from the relationship with its roommates.

The anthropomorphization of the place draws attention to the value of the relational state of dependence experienced by the exhibition space in relation to its artists: «Yet the first time I changed my nature it was horrible. Within minutes I felt violated. I remember well that I screamed in a shrill voice: “My shape cannot be touched! My soul is inviolable”, but they went about their business, in silence; they moved the one and the other, above and below; they did not pay the slightest attention to my needs, they only cared about my good looks». The difficulty of finding a meeting point, a it emerges from the testimony, seems to find a moment of resolution in the fulfillment of an aspiration of the place, which shines through against the light: being lived in the fullness of its essence in a communion that brings aggregation. In this sense, the joint action of the artists becomes a coherent guise for spatial architecture, which rediscovers the pleasure of a unitary orientation. This translates on a compositional level into an organic sharing of the exhibition area.

The serpentine vision of My Anaconda don’t, an endless boot with a fluid snake texture, by Andrea Frosolini, joins the spaces of the room, constituting an element of continuity and attraction, while hooks and chains of Evasioni, suspended simulacra made with the help of a 3D printer by Guendalina Urbani, bring back the origins of the gallery garage, simultaneously investigating the appearance of mimesis. Disarmour has been struggling, incision of an aluminum plate made with a screwdriver by Francesca Cornacchini, ecstatic shouts then,on the wall that intersperses the white cube, echoing the crudeness of the struggle of the creative act, while Daniele Sciacca crystallizes in the video installation Attempt to fly the perpetual motion of a motorbike in motion, capturing the moment of its detachment from the ground. On the opposite spatial side, the avatars by Federica Di Pietrantonio in the video installation Rain on me immerse the bystander in the fluid aquatic dimension, literally letting rains and waterfalls pass through them in a corrosive loop. Sveva Angeletti then investigates artificial intelligence by creating Tell me about it, an intelligent platform capable of transcribing sentences intercepted by the crowd.

On the other hand, Chiara Fantaccione reflects on the relationship between nature and artifice with the installation Sublime stop before the visible lights, a poetic visual connection between the space of virtual representation and the intimate sphere of the natural dimension. The performances conceived by Alessandra Cecchini and Marco De Rosa, reproducing the vitality of fragments of life, cancel the auroral dimension typical of the white cube, as it is demonstrated by the forced training of a customer of the gallery in Not sure what i’m looking at and the utopian hiking of Acrobatic Construction. In particular, this last test reverberates a yearning that is not only individual, but rather a shared utopia and ceaselessly sought by the community of artists who populate In Situ. A desire for exploration, which is reflected in the desire to break the spatial boundaries of architecture itself, as it is demonstrated by the installation expansion of the exhibition. In the frame of Lorem Ipsum, therefore, the heterogeneous coexistence of individual research determines the realization of a hyperbolic tendency towards a common orientation of extension towards those shaded territories beyond the visible. In this perspective, the collective marks a new ideological direction, and at the same time a point of no return beyond which one can only proceed forward and discover what the line holds beyond the horizon.
