“If you came at night like a broken king,

If you came by day not knowing what you came for,

It would be the same…”

TS Eliot Little Gidding

To celebrate the conclusion of the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale, Sugar Street Gallery is pleased to announce the group show (No) Place Like Home. Mixed media contributions from eleven international artists including Andrew Logan and Zandra Rhodes reflect and dialogue with the Biennale title How Will We Live Together, exploring how the idea of “home” intersects with the emotional, practical and geographical.

“One’s place of birth is only an accident; you choose your true homeland with your body and your heart. You love it all your life or you leave it at once.”

– Abdourahman Waberi, The United States of Africa

Where you live might not be your home. Not all of us are immigrants in space, but we are all travellers en route from a known past to an uncertain future. Our culture, our values, our identity are what we carry with us, bundled into the suitcase of the self. We take what is most precious. “Home” can remain alive generation after generation, long after it has ceased to exist as a physical place, contained in the intangible. We can’t take everything with us; we have to pack what means most to us, and art can be one room in the collective storehouse of the future.
